Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is a premier institute of science and technology established in 2008. India is a land of vast diversity, a home to hundreds of communities and languages. In the northeast of India lies Assam. Even with the existence of multiple tribes and languages in Assam, Assamese is considered as the official language with more than 15 million speakers and serves as lingua franca of the region. Though there are differences in spoken medium, the script for Assamese language is very similar to that of Bengali script, historically there were certain differences in the former scripts but the ones which are being used now are the same except the character ‘ ’ (ra) and ‘ ’ (wa), which is missing in Bengali script. However, there are not a lot of Assamese Unicode typefaces available on the internet. Even among the available ones most of them have been designed for print mediums like newspapers or magazines. The Need of a Digital Typeface for Assamese Script

Using sign and symbols as a mode of communication is a very old tradition. Our ancestors have used it efficiently to communicate and share thoughts between each other. In the later period, along with the evolution, different tools and techniques also developed to support and enhance the communication process. Use of type or letters was one such development in the history. This helped to translate language into a written form which can be preserved and share with wider audience. Across the timeline, designers and researchers have experimented with the different attributes of letterforms to communicate effectively. Understanding the Experiential, Experimental and Spirited Aspects of Typography

The paper brings to focus, the role of the writing tools and writing medium on the evolution of the Telugu script from Brahmi script. It also correlates with the time period of the script transformation. The information on the Telugu script from the published works of prominent historians and linguists was studied. Then the data collected from various sources such as manuscripts, inscriptions and library archives were analyzed and presented. The evolution of the Telugu script reaches a pinnacle by the end of the twentieth century AD, thanks to the standardization process that is necessary for a print-oriented mass modern society. However, due to the creative demands of the advertising and book publishing industry, the artistic dimension of the script found expression. The paper lays special emphasis on the impact of ergonomics of the Ghantam (metallic stylus) and the tool interaction on the Tadipatra (processed palm-leaf writing surface) and its influence on the rectilinear and curvilinear letterforms. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Impact of Writing Tools in the Evolution of Telugu Script

Sikkim is the first official organic farming state in India. However, organic farming has brought challenges to both farmers and distributors. Secondary research shows issues in the value chain of the organic produce. Design research was carried out to understand organic farming in Sikkim at a broad systemic level. After understanding the issues faced by various stakeholders through primary research, system maps were created. System Mapping: Understanding the Value Chain of Organic Farming in Sikkim, India

India has a diverse visual culture and languages. Cinema art, especially the publicity materials used in Bollywood, is one of the significant parts of this visual culture. Publicity in print media is evident since the beginning. It started with text-based newspaper advertisements, shortly followed by posters and banners full of visuals. Film posters act as a form of visual language through which the gist of the film can be perceived. It is a composition of static image and text that gives the firsthand visual experience of the movie to the viewers. Along with the visuals, title design is another key element of a movie poster. It has been used as a logotype. Unlike the conventional typography, title design has been explored in many ways such as exploration with the shape, size, color, position, orientation, visual texture, and letterform structure to convey meaning and theme of the movie more effectively. There is significant literature on the visual content of the poster art; however, the title design has been neglected throughout the timeline. This study is intended to examine the unique design features used in the title design, their trends, and the role of technology. The finding reveals key design features and their trend across the timeline. These features also show a significant change from pre-digital to the digital era, revealing the role of technology and other factors in the development. © 2021 (individual papers), the author(s).

Title design in bollywood movie posters: Design features, trends, and the role of technology

Indian cinema comprises films produced across India in different languages. Bollywood, a Hindi cinema industry based in Mumbai, is the biggest entertainment industry in India. It shows a diverse and dynamic pattern of visual culture. One can experience this fluid panorama of visual culture through film posters. Over the decades, film posters have been one of the major medium for film publicity. It features images and text to create firsthand visual experience to its audience. As a key element of film poster, title design plays an important role in connoting the theme of the film. It has evolved under influence of various factors like, socio-cultural context, technology and usages. The impact of this development can be seen in terms of technique, composition, color and expressive typography. This paper aims to study and analyze the title design in Bollywood film posters using semiotics framework. Analysis is done based on its structural parameter, relationship with the theme of film, context of use and production technique. © Springer India 2015.
