Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is a premier institute of science and technology established in 2008. IITH has been consistently ranked in the&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/reports/" rel="noopener noreferrer">top 10 institutes</a>&nbsp;in India for Engineering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nirfindia.org/2021/EngineeringRanking.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">according to NIRF</a>&nbsp;making it one of the most coveted schools for science and technology in the country.

IITH offers&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/academics/under-graduate/">undergraduate programs</a>&nbsp;in all the classical engineering disciplines, applied sciences, design, as well as several modern interdisciplinary areas. The vibrant research culture is evident from the number of patents and publications that IITH produces consistently every year. There are separate programs for technology, design, science, and liberal arts. Devising new teaching methodologies during the COVID-19 pandemic

The Ahom dynasty has ruled Assam for nearly six hundred years. With the leadership of Sui-ka-pha (1228 - 1268) prince, they made their first capital in Charaideo district of Assam. During their reign, they built massive brick buildings, houses, and temples. Currently, some of them are preserved under the Archeology Survey of India (ASI), Guwahati circle, Assam. Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar, and Kareng Ghar are some of the most iconic buildings preserved under ASI. These monuments are constructed within the 1744 - 1768 time period. These buildings are some of the most important tourist attraction spots in the Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. With due course of time, it is observed that the construction materials are decaying. To preserve the aesthetic of the structures, modern bricks and mortar compositions are used to bridge the gap. This paper investigates and compares the early construction materials by analyzing the structural composition and patterns of the bricks and mortars of the three monuments. The analysis of collected brick and mortar samples was done using EDX, FT-IR, and PXRD. The EDX result displays the same periodic elements in bricks and mortars with varying weight percentages. The FT-IR spectra and PXRD patterns of bricks of Kareng Ghar and Talatal Ghar are found similar whereas the Rang Ghar displays a slightly different spectrum and pattern. In the case of mortar samples, the FT-IR and PXRD analysis show similar structural patterns. © 2021 Author(s).

Comparative material study of ancient bricks and mortars of Sivasagar and Charaideo area, Assam, India

Sikkim is the first official organic farming state in India. However, organic farming has brought challenges to both farmers and distributors. Secondary research shows issues in the value chain of the organic produce. Design research was carried out to understand organic farming in Sikkim at a broad systemic level. After understanding the issues faced by various stakeholders through primary research, system maps were created. This paper puts forward a qualitative study about the gaps observed in the organic farming scenario in Sikkim, thus putting forth the role of service design as solutions, and its role in making the whole system environmentally sustainable. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

System Mapping: Understanding the Value Chain of Organic Farming in Sikkim, India

India has a diverse visual culture and languages. Cinema art, especially the publicity materials used in Bollywood, is one of the significant parts of this visual culture. Publicity in print media is evident since the beginning. It started with text-based newspaper advertisements, shortly followed by posters and banners full of visuals. Film posters act as a form of visual language through which the gist of the film can be perceived. It is a composition of static image and text that gives the firsthand visual experience of the movie to the viewers. Along with the visuals, title design is another key element of a movie poster. It has been used as a logotype. Unlike the conventional typography, title design has been explored in many ways such as exploration with the shape, size, color, position, orientation, visual texture, and letterform structure to convey meaning and theme of the movie more effectively. There is significant literature on the visual content of the poster art; however, the title design has been neglected throughout the timeline. This study is intended to examine the unique design features used in the title design, their trends, and the role of technology. The finding reveals key design features and their trend across the timeline. These features also show a significant change from pre-digital to the digital era, revealing the role of technology and other factors in the development. © 2021 (individual papers), the author(s).

Title design in bollywood movie posters: Design features, trends, and the role of technology

Living root bridges are an excellent example of the amalgamation of human innovation and nature. The bridges are grown by methods of tree-shaping using the aerial roots of Ficus Elastica (Rubber fig tree/Indian rubber tree), which grows abundantly in the tropical rainforest regions of Khasi hills, Meghalaya. The practice has been in place for centuries to tackle the issue of crossing robust water bodies. The paper intends to understand the significance of living root bridges in the communities of Meghalaya and their potential to be used as a guiding model for contemporary design practices. Bio-architecture of Living Root Bridges

Additive manufacturing technology, popularly known as 3D printing, is a contemporary method of customizing and manufacturing products. The 3D print market is expected to be worth more than $10 billion by the year 2021. The future of fashion aims to make use of 3D printing technology in the manufacturing process; however, practitioners are still doubtful whether this technology has the potential to revolutionize the fashion industry. Although 3D printing technology offers benefits to the businesses and production processes, whether it can replace the present mass production methods is still questionable. Until now, 3D printed fashion is studied from the perspective of material and technology applications. The perspective and adoption intents of the consumers are not explored, specifically in the Indian context. Hence, this research aims to study possible influences of 3D printed fashion products’ adoption intention on Indian millennials. Personal traits are the essential basis of human behaviors that are closely associated with human needs. These personal traits, such as social, functional, hedonic, and cognitive attributes, are also arguably better predictors of consumer behavior than demographic or psychographic factors. Hence, recognizing the importance of studying present-day consumers’ adoption preferences relating to 3DP fashion products, the current study explores the role of personal traits in adopting 3D printed fashion products through domain-specific factors such as fashion innovativeness and fashion leadership. The data were collected from Indian millennials via the online survey method. Research findings of this study add to the existing conceptual literature of 3D printing applications in fashion and guide fashion design practitioners by providing influencing factors of 3D printed fashion adoption among Indian millennial fashion consumers. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The Influence of Personal Traits on Indian Millennial’s Adoption of 3D Printed Fashion Products

Technology is increasingly essential in engaging millennials. Over the past few decades, education pedagogy has struggled to develop new methods and tools to create better and higher quality education. Virtual reality (VR) technology is one of the solutions for new education pedagogy that can solve the restriction of space, time, and the act of learning. The VR inclusion into learning pedagogy also facilitates self-learning and problem-solving as well as assist students to explore new ideas. This study aims to develop and trial lessons of art and design using VR technology instead of traditional art and design classes. The participants are 6th standard school students. Within traditional teaching of art and design, depth of learning is insufficient. To challenge the traditional environment, VR technology-based art and design lesson are applied in the core curricula of art education in this study. Two sets of tests are conducted with 6th graders, one is pre- and post-test with VR-based lesson, and the other is pre- and post-test with non-VR-based lessons. Overall, this study hypothesizes that VR will make for better learning and upskilling of students’ knowledge of art and design. This study found that the teaching outcome with VR and conventional teaching outcomes has a number of significant differences. Enhancing Creative Learning Methods by Immersive Virtual Reality: A Pilot Study in Classroom Environment

Root canal treatment (RCT) is one of the standard dental procedures commonly done by dentist throughout the world. It involves removing infected pulp tissue from the tooth's pulp chamber and canals, cleaning and shaping of the root canals, disinfection of the hollow canal, and filling it with “gutta-percha” or root canal sealer. Nonetheless, it is found that many of the RCT procedures fail due to inadequacies like missing of root canal orifices, improper cleaning, or difficulties in locating the orifice. In most of the case, the failure of the treatment leads to persistent pain and secondary infection, which ultimately force the patient to undergo a subsequent RCT or extraction. Several clinical immersion sessions were conducted at MNR Dental College and Hospital and Malla Reddy Institute of Dental Sciences to understand the issues and problem-related to this root canal treatment. They were followed by an online questionnaire survey to gather a broader perspective of medical practitioners. After a year-long study, we were able to identify a few areas where design intervention can lead to the overall improvement of the root canal treatment and also can improve the workflow and comfort of the dentist. This research paper documents and highlights the research to find an unmet clinical need. This research project, though in its nascent stage, has shown great potential and with further research and development can lead to the development of a medical device that helps to improve the efficiency of the root canal treatment. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Northeast India is home to several tribes and tribal communities. In a tribal context, art, architecture and culture are intertwined into the day-to-day activities. Although most vernacular structures in the northeast use similar locally available materials like bamboo, wood, mud and thatch, they are different from each other. This factor of identity stems from their diverse cultural practices and beliefs. The paper explores the relationship between culture, art and architecture in northeast India, taking the case example of Meghalaya.
