Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is a premier institute of science and technology established in 2008. In this article, free convection of heat and mass transfer along a vertical wavy surface in a Newtonian fluid saturated Darcy porous medium is studied by considering cross diffusion (namely the Soret and the Dufour effects) in the medium. The vertical wavy wall and the flow governing equations are transformed to a plane geometry case by using a suitable transformation. Then a similarity solution to this problem is presented under the large Darcy-Rayleigh number assumption. The governing partial differential equations are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations that are integrated using numerical methods to study the nature of the non-dimensional heat and mass transfer coefficients in the medium. The results are presented for a range of the flow governing parameters such as the diffusivity ratio parameter, the buoyancy ratio parameter, the Soret parameter, the Dufour parameter and the amplitude of the wavy surface. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Free convective heat and mass transfer in a doubly stratified porous medium saturated with a power-law fluid

The effect of power law index parameter of the non-Newtonian fluid on free convection heat and mass transfer from a vertical wall is analyzed by considering double dispersion in a non-Darcy porous medium with constant wall temperature and concentration conditions. The Ostwald-de Waele power law model is used to characterize the non-Newtonian fluid behavior. In this case a similarity solution is possible. The variation of heat and mass transfer coefficients with the governing parameters such as power law index, thermal and solutal dispersion parameters, inertia parameter, buoyancy ratio, and the Lewis number is discussed for a wide range of values of these parameters. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2008.

The effect of double dispersion on natural convection heat and mass transfer in a non-newtonian fluid saturated non-darcy porous medium

In this paper we deal with the problem of free convection heat and mass transfer of a non-Newtonian power law fluid with yield stress from a vertical flat plate embedded in a fluid-saturated Darcy porous medium, considering Soret and Dufour effects. Here, we consider two different types of boundary conditions. In the first case, we assume the vertical wall is maintained at uniform wall temperature and concentration, and in the second case, we assume the wall is maintained at uniform wall heat and mass flux conditions. In both these cases, similarity solutions are possible. The results are analyzed with reference to the Soret and Dufour parameters along with other parameters that arise due to the non-Newtonian character of the fluid. Temperature and concentration profiles in the boundary layer are presented, together with the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers, for various combinations of problem parameters. Soret and dufour effects on free convection of non-Newtonian power law fluids with yield stress from a vertical flat plate in saturated porous media

The stability of Soret-driven thermosolutal convection in a shallow horizontal layer of a porous medium subjected to inclined thermal and solutal gradients of finite magnitude is investigated theoretically by means of a linear stability analysis. The horizontal components of these gradients induce a Hadley circulation, which becomes unstable when vertical components are sufficiently large. We employed a two-term Galerkin approximation for various modes of instability. The effect of the Soret parameter on the mechanism of instability of the thermosolutal convection is investigated. Results are presented for various values of the governing parameters of the flow. It is observed that the Soret parameter has a significant effect on convective instability and this is discussed. © 2008 Cambridge University Press.

Soret-driven thermosolutal convection induced by inclined thermal and solutal gradients in a shallow horizontal layer of a porous medium

The effect of Soret and Dufour parameters on free convection from a horizontal flat plate in a Darcian fluid saturated porous medium is analyzed using the similarity solution technique. With constant wall temperature and concentration, the similarity solution is possible even when Soret and Dufour effects are considered in the medium. The transformed coupled systems of ordinary differential equations involve parameters such as the buoyancy ratio parameter N and diffusivity ratio Le in addition to the Soret Sr and Dufour Df parameters. The effect of all these parameters on the convective transport has been analyzed, and the variation of heat and mass transfer coefficients with Dufour and Soret parameters is presented through computer generated graphs. Soret and Dufour effects on free convection heat and mass transfer from a horizontal flat plate in a Darcy porous medium

Free convection heat and mass transfer from a vertical surface in a doubly stratified Darcy porous medium subject to Soret and Dufour effects is studied. The similarity solution is possible for the case of constant heat and mass flux conditions, when the thermal and solutal stratification of the medium are assumed to vary in the power function as x1/3. The flow, temperature, and concentration fields are affected by the complex interactions among the diffusivity ratio Le, buoyancy ratio parameter N, Soret number Sr, Dufour number Df, and the thermal and solutal stratification parameters 1 and 2, respectively. The results for the wall temperature and concentration obtained are presented for various values of the parameters Le, N, 1, 2, Sr, and Df. It is noted that large differences between the values of Sr and Df, and of 1 and 2, lead to changes in the sign of the temperature and concentration fields. Copyright © 2007 Begell House, Inc.
