Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is a premier institute of science and technology established in 2008. IITH has been consistently ranked in the&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/reports/" rel="noopener noreferrer">top 10 institutes</a>&nbsp;in India for Engineering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nirfindia.org/2021/EngineeringRanking.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">according to NIRF</a>&nbsp;making it one of the most coveted schools for science and technology in the country.

There are separate programs for technology, design, science, and liberal arts. This paper empirically determines the optimal level of international reserves for India by explicitly incorporating the country's sovereign risk associated with the default on external debt. The optimum level of reserves is determined by minimizing the central bank's cost function, which consists of costs due to high reserve holdings and costs due to reserve depletion. The simulated optimum reserves for the period 1994-2010 indicate that actual reserves are higher than the optimum value across the sample period, except during 1997-1998. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.

Optimum international reserves and sovereign risk: Evidence from India

Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) composed her ‘verbal still lifes’ in Tender Buttons in explicit dialogue with the Post-Impressionist – particularly Cubist – uses of the still life. The utter obviousness and universal givenness of its referents have made it the genre least requiring exegesis or special attention. This leanness best explains the fascination it exerted upon the Modernists: devoid of subjective intrusions and emptied of traditional symbolic associations, it was best suited to express the ‘pure’ and fundamental components of visual composition. But even in its most abstract and formalist moments, the still life continues to harbour the disruptive plenitude of the non-human as that which provides the ground for the appearance of the human. I argue that Stein's Tender Buttons designates the still life as a space for alternative and possible forms of being human. Rather than being deliberately nonsensical or opposed to subjectivity as such, Tender Buttons remains cognizant of the inevitability of a subject whose every act of interpretation and inscription also constitutes self-interpretation and self-inscription. At the same time, it explores the possibility that the realm of things – rendered objects by the positing of the subject – might in fact offer the most congenial space for the recuperation of what is not yet or no longer human. Still lifes tend to accommodate both strangeness and familiarity in equal measure. The objects depicted are types rather than unique individuals, and their commonness makes them easy to replicate and possess. © 2012 David Gallagher editorial matter and selection.

Exploring in-humanity: Gertrude Stein's tender buttons and still-life painting

&nbsp;This chapter analyzes the processes through which coherent claims about global identities are articulated. It argues that invocations of scale, such as the global, are contingent: they become meaningful in specific historical and cultural contexts. Two sets of media productions—“Global Indian” branding commercials and representations of “Hapa” identities centered in North America—constitute the empirical basis of the analysis. The chapter proposes that the construction of global identities is gainfully interrogated through the notions of scale-making processes 1 and remediation 2 : understanding media representations of global identities as remediated, scale-making processes disrupt straightforward conceptions of media and draw attention to the ways in which they are embedded in specific historical and cultural contexts. The chapter brings together theories of remediation and scale-making processes to highlight the ways in which particular imaginations of scale and media forms are choreographed into coherent articulations. In doing so, it also offers a methodological contribution toward analyzing claims to the “global.

This investigation is an attempt to study resilience in adolescents preparing for Engineering/Medical Entrance Examinations. It is a part of another research investigation on resilience in which 200 adolescents (mean age=18.36) experiencing high academic adversity were chosen from a larger group of 566. This was done by selection of those adolescents who scored above Q3 on the Academic Adversity Scale, developed during the research work. In the present investigation, the resilience of these 200 adolescents was assessed through administration of the Mampane Resilience Scale. The sample was divided into high resilience (HR) and low resilience (LR) groups through a median split of the resilience scores. The academic performance of HR and LR groups as well as HR males and HR females was compared. Finally an attempt was made to find out if resilience scores could predict academic success; the criteria for success being selection to one's target institute for higher education. The results revealed that individuals reporting high resilience showed better academic performance as compared to those perceiving themselves to be low on resilience. Males scored higher on resilience and performed better in competitive examinations than females did. A major finding of this study was that the chances of HR adolescents being successful in competitive examinations was found to be 120% greater than that of LR adolescents. Future researches are required to understand better, the role of resilience in academic performance which in turn may help adolescents to navigate through important educational transitional points in their lives. © Journal of the Indian Academy of Applied Psychology.

Resilience and academic achievement among adolescents

In this paper, we test for Wagner's law for 15 Indian states. We consider nine panels of states based on geography and level of economic development. Using panel unit-root, panel-cointegration, and panel-Granger causality analysis, we unravel strong evidence of Wagner's law. However, we find that the Wagner's law relationship is consumption rather than capital expenditure driven. This is a fresh revelation and our results are robust to different model specifications. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Evidence of Wagner's law from Indian states

PurposeThe purpose of the study was to understand the learnings of adults (who are undergraduates, post graduates or working professionals) who volunteered to be the mentors to make a difference in the life of the adolescents who are from underprivileged backgrounds. Design/methodology/approachThe authors conducted their study in a not for profit organization (NPO) which has a unique mentoring program called Dronocharya Ekalavya (DNE) mentoring program in Hyderabad, India. The authors conducted telephonic interviews with 15 mentors using a semi-structured questionnaire and also administered an online survey to 59 respondents. Since the study is a qualitative research, results cannot be generalisable. FindingsThe findings of the study conclude that mentors do learn from the mentoring program organized by NPO. Mentors learnt soft skills such as interpersonal skills, leadership skills, etc. Also they learnt to build rapport and trust. The study highlighted the changes in behaviors of mentors such as self-realisation, and change in attitude. Research limitations/implicationsSocial desirability effect might have impacted the results but all efforts have been invested in carefully handling the data. A possible longitudinal study can focus on comparing learning outcomes of mentors at the beginning of the mentoring program with learning outcomes of mentors at the end of the mentoring program. Future research could focus on how and what do they learn from each other by expanding the study to many organizations. Originality/valueThere is no empirical research conducted to study the benefits gained by mentors through mentoring program, especially referencing to youth mentoring. This study will help organizations (both NGO and other businesses) understand the benefits of mentoring to the mentors. © 2012, © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

This paper is an attempt at exploring the possibility of reconciling the two interpretations of biolinguistics which have been recently projected by Koster (Biolinguistics 3(1):61-92, 2009). The two interpretations-trivial and nontrivial-can be roughly construed as non-internalist and internalist conceptions of biolinguistics respectively. The internalist approach boils down to a conception of language where language as a mental grammar in the form of I-language grows and functions like a biological organ. On the other hand, under such a construal consistent with Koster's (Biolinguistics 3(1):61-92, 2009), the non-internalist version does not necessarily have to be externalist in nature; rather it is a matter of mutual reinforcement of biology and culture under the rubric of a co-evolutionary dynamics. Here it will be argued that the apparent dichotomy between these two conceptions of biolinguistics can perhaps be resolved if we have a richer synthesis that accounts for both internalism and non-internalism. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Can Internalism and Externalism be Reconciled in a Biological Epistemology of Language?

Sense of agency refers to the sense of authorship of a given action. While the phenomenon seems too obvious to demand further investigation, pathological conditions such as delusions of control suggest the requirement of further investigation into the phenomenon of sense of agency. The traditional view point regarding the role of intention in sense of agency is complemented by computational models of motor control. Accordingly, we hypothesized and tested the role of error monitoring mechanisms in the sense of agency by manipulating the feedback given independent of the responses of the participant while performing a Flanker task. The results point out the potential role of error monitoring mechanisms by modulating the forward model predictions to experience a sense of agency for unintended actions. © CogSci 2012.All rights reserved.
