Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is a premier institute of science and technology established in 2008. IITH has been consistently ranked in the&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/reports/" rel="noopener noreferrer">top 10 institutes</a>&nbsp;in India for Engineering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nirfindia.org/2021/EngineeringRanking.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">according to NIRF</a>&nbsp;making it one of the most coveted schools for science and technology in the country.

IITH offers&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/academics/under-graduate/">undergraduate programs</a>&nbsp;in all the classical engineering disciplines, applied sciences, design, as well as several modern interdisciplinary areas. Students are given a flexibility to explore a broad set of areas, and potentially pursue a minor or double major in a discipline that is not their own. Students who wish to seek a deeper understanding of their own discipline are strongly encouraged to get involved in cutting-edge research with the help of a faculty to mentor them, and earn an Honors in their own field.

The very foundation of IIT Hyderabad is based on&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/research/">research and innovation</a>. The vibrant research culture is evident from the number of patents and publications that IITH produces consistently every year. IITH offers&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/academics/programmes-offered/">graduate programs</a>&nbsp;at both a masters, and a doctoral level, in several diverse areas. There are separate programs for technology, design, science, and liberal arts. The&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/academics/post-graduate/">MTech program</a>&nbsp;is offered in various modes and durations to cater to the ever-growing need of postgraduate level professionals in the country.

IITH encourages and supports&nbsp;<a href="https://iic-iith.netlify.app/index.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">innovation and entrepreneurship</a>&nbsp;at every stage. The minor program in entrepreneurship is open to all students of IITH, and many of the courses are offered by industrialists who are entrepreneurs themselves. There are various&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/research/centres-incubators/">innovation centers and incubators</a>&nbsp;that promote entrepreneurship and help mentor young innovators. IITH has been very successful in building tie-ups with leading academic institutions around the globe.

IITH enjoys a very special relationship with Japanese universities and industries that goes beyond academic and research collaborations. In fact, some of the iconic buildings in IITH campus will carry the signature of Japanese architecture.

This paper examines whether the fiscal deficit limit of 3% as prescribed by the FRBMA is justified keeping in mind the increasing spending requirement and economic growth of Indian states? The study uses a panel data framework of taking sixteen non-special category states of India for the period over 2001–2002 to 2016–2017. This paper is the first of its kind that uses a threshold regression model due to Khan and Senhadji (IMF Staff Papers 48(1):1–21, 2001) to find the threshold level of fiscal deficit. The empirical findings show that the threshold level of fiscal deficit in sixteen states taken together is found to be 3%, which is in the line of prescribed limit of FRBM act. But at disaggregated level, it is observed that in middle- and low-income states the threshold level of fiscal deficit is 3.9% and 3.5%, respectively. This suggests that states can go for some additional percent of fiscal deficit above the limit prescribed by FRBMA. Therefore, the fiscal deficit limit of 3% needs to be revisited to give more fiscal room to the Indian states. © 2020, Institute for Social and Economic Change.

Threshold level of fiscal deficit: revisiting FRBMA limit in Indian states

Purpose: This paper investigates the per-capita output club convergence in case of 120 countries for the period 1995–2015. Further, we disaggregate per-capita output into three broad sectors such as agriculture, industry, and service and investigate the convergence hypothesis. Design/methodology/approach: The paper tests this hypothesis using the Phillips and Sul panel club convergence technique. Findings: Our findings are as follows: (1) our results indicate the evidence of output divergence for the full sample; (2) when countries are divided into different clubs, the results exhibit the sign of per capita output club convergence both for aggregate and three major sectors. Further, this study confirms that industry's per capita output is the main driver for aggregate per-capita output club convergence in case of club 1. For club 2, agriculture's per capita output is a primary source for aggregate per capita output club convergence. Likewise, in the case of clubs 3 and 4, we find the service sector's per capita output is the main component for aggregate per-capita output club convergence; (3) both the service and industry sectors are major drivers for aggregate per-capita output club convergence. Practical implications: This study suggests to the policymaker that sector-specific policies need to be adopted to boost the per-capita output growth by improving the performance of each of the sectors across the countries. Originality/value: Notwithstanding, there are many studies that examine the output convergence using a notion of beta and sigma convergence, but studies regarding per capita output club convergence both at the aggregate and sectoral level are scanty. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited.

A sector-level analysis of output club convergence in case of a global economy

Though voluminous empirical studies examine the linkage between energy consumption (EC) and economic growth, the impact of human capital on EC is scarce. This paper investigates this research issue by using annual data of 73 countries over the period 1990–2014. Furthermore, we classify 73 countries based on income (developed, developing and emerging economies) and regions (Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America). The empirical results indicate that human capital negatively affects EC. This implies that EC can be lowered by improving human capital, which ultimately can help in energy conservation and environmental protection. Policies promoting substitutability between energy inputs and human capital, and structural policies like improving economic efficiency and improving human capital through educational levels can help economies in achieving greater sustainable growth with low EC. © 2020 Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries

Addressing gendered responses to dietary modifications among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Psycho-oncology research in India reveals that family caregivers and oncologists are primary medical decision-makers frequently acting on behalf of the patient. Thus, patients are rarely asked about their wants and needs. This study aimed to understand Indian cancer patients’ needs and expectations from their support network. Twenty-six cancer patients participated in semi-structured interviews exploring patients’ needs, perceptions of their support network and the type of support they would prefer, and their experiences of receiving this support. The interviews were analyzed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. Emergent themes included: (i) role of the oncologist: being the primary medical decision-maker, communicating in a style consistent with patient preferences; (ii) role of the immediate family: being emotionally available, helping with navigating the hospital system, aiding in medical adherence; (iii) role of relatives and friends: giving advice and providing tangible aid and services; and (iv) role of other cancer patients: helping with coping with the illness. The study highlights Indian patients’ ability to define their supportive network and assign specific roles to them. The study implies the need to develop communication training programs and peer-to-peer support groups to address patients’ unmet communication needs and aid in coping. © 2019, American Association for Cancer Education.

Indian Cancer Patients’ Needs, Perceptions of, and Expectations from their Support Network: a Qualitative Study

This paper empirically examines the impact of the price of crude oil petrol and palm oil on Indonesia's output. Using quarterly data from 2000Q1 to 2019Q2 and both linear and non-linear autoregressive distributed lag approaches to cointegration, we find: 1) a significant non-linear effect of oil prices on the country's output; 2) a decline in prices of oil can have a greater impact on the country's output as compared to an increase in oil prices; and 3) the palm oil price changes have a bigger effect on the country's output compared to petroleum price. © 2020 Bank Indonesia Institute. Locked in: What the COVID-19 pandemic spells for victims of domestic violence

People hearing voices are often considered as those who need psychiatric and psychological treatment. There has been a lack of emphasis on understanding the meaning behind the voices and the personal history of the voice-hearers. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the lived experiences of individuals who hear voices. The study used the Maastricht Interview Schedule in order to elicit a complete picture of voice-hearing experiences. The findings from thematic analyses revealed that emphasis on understanding voices was highly dominated by the biomedical approach, with most people questioning their normalcy after seeking psychiatric care. The study also found various strategies voice-hearers used to deal with their voices and subsequently control them. Various theoretical, social, and clinical implications have also been discussed that draw from the frameworks of critical psychology and experts-by-experiences approach. © 2020, © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Living with voices: a thematic analysis of individuals’ experiences of voice-hearing in India

The solidarity between socially marginalized groups in India is often compromised, directly or indirectly, by their own internecine complicity with structures and histories of systematic social violence. We look at this problem through a close analysis of the graphic novel Bhimayana, which brings together key events from the life of B. R. Ambedkar - the architect of the Indian Constitution who was born into the "untouchable"Mahar caste - and the artwork of the Gond tribal artists Durgabai and Subhash Vyam. While there is considerable affinity in terms of socioeconomic disadvantages between the tribes and the lower castes of India, these affinities are strained by contradictions that problematize the principle of solidarity. We argue that the intrusion of complicity and guilt into performances of solidarity finally serves to strengthen the political empowerment of these groups by making it possible to acknowledge their implication in the history of social harm. Between Solidarity and Complicity: The Politics of Representation in Bhimayana

Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the interrelations between purchasing power parity (PPP) and uncovered interest parity (UIP) in BRICS economies, namely, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, by checking the validity of the capital-enhanced equilibrium exchange rate (CHEER) approach. Further, this study tests whether the CHEER results are data frequency-dependent. Design/methodology/approach: The present study uses monthly data ranging from 1997M01 to 2016M12 and considers the US economy as the representative foreign country. The study uses structural break unit root test and structural break cointegration technique to test the presence of economic relationships between nominal exchange rates and each of the price and interest rate differentials. Then, the study examines the validity of the CHEER approach by testing the appropriate theoretical restrictions. Findings: The cointegration results suggest the existence of two cointegrating vectors representing UIP and PPP conditions. For all countries, the data appear to support the hypothesis that the system contains UIP and PPP relations. However, each of the international parity hypotheses is strongly rejected when formulated in isolation and jointly, leading to repudiation of the CHEER validity. Further, it is found that the results are data frequency-dependent and suggest that higher frequencies should be used as they provide additional information. Originality/value: First, the literature on equilibrium exchange rates in BRICS economies is scanty. BRICS economies are large-emerging economies and one of the fastest growing economies and thus entail an empirical enquiry on their exchange rates. Second, the empirical application has mainly used monthly data to test the validity of the CHEER approach. However, data frequencies could affect the results. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to check data frequency-dependency in examination of the CHEER approach. © 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited.
