Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is a premier institute of science and technology established in 2008. IITH has been consistently ranked in the&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/reports/" rel="noopener noreferrer">top 10 institutes</a>&nbsp;in India for Engineering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nirfindia.org/2021/EngineeringRanking.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">according to NIRF</a>&nbsp;making it one of the most coveted schools for science and technology in the country.

There are separate programs for technology, design, science, and liberal arts. India is a land of vast diversity, a home to hundreds of communities and languages. In the northeast of India lies Assam. Even with the existence of multiple tribes and languages in Assam, Assamese is considered as the official language with more than 15 million speakers and serves as lingua franca of the region. Though there are differences in spoken medium, the script for Assamese language is very similar to that of Bengali script, historically there were certain differences in the former scripts but the ones which are being used now are the same except the character ‘ ’ (ra) and ‘ ’ (wa), which is missing in Bengali script. However, there are not a lot of Assamese Unicode typefaces available on the internet. Even among the available ones most of them have been designed for print mediums like newspapers or magazines. The Need of a Digital Typeface for Assamese Script

Using sign and symbols as a mode of communication is a very old tradition. Our ancestors have used it efficiently to communicate and share thoughts between each other. In the later period, along with the evolution, different tools and techniques also developed to support and enhance the communication process. Use of type or letters was one such development in the history. This helped to translate language into a written form which can be preserved and share with wider audience. Across the timeline, designers and researchers have experimented with the different attributes of letterforms to communicate effectively. Understanding the Experiential, Experimental and Spirited Aspects of Typography

Design briefs act as kick-starters for most design projects in academic and professional settings. Briefs serve as structuring and assessment tool for academic design studio projects. Frameworks for design briefs stated by scholars are reviewed to arrive at a comprehensive summary for the structural components and format of design briefs that can be considered for writing briefs. When writing briefs, it is important to understand the theoretical concepts that help ascertain the nature of a design problem as well as understand the approaches to reframing briefs and thinking in design to be aware of the varied ways an individual may interpret the brief. Writing a "design task" or a "need statement" at varied levels of abstraction, from the very specific and concrete to generic and abstract, has been deliberated based on a research study that focused on "need statement," a component of design brief. The article will discuss the findings of this study undertaken with design students. The work would be of interest to design teachers, students, and practitioners in setting up design briefs and understanding the relevance of design task or need statements in the design process. © 2022 Common Ground Research Networks. Design Briefs: Review, Reframing Briefs, and Analysis of a Study

Kolkata, hitherto known as Calcutta, till 2001, is the capital of West Bengal, India. Sutanuti, Kalikata, and Gobindapur were three villages that amalgamated today's town, which has a more than 300-year history and acted as the capital of British East India through 1911. Although one of India's oldest Heritage cities is developing in becoming the Smart City, the city has never designated planning policies. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation Authority (KMDA) was established in 1962, whereas the city’s coalescence occurred in 1690, leading to an extended period of unplanned city growth. Asymmetrical urban sprawl evolved due to several factors, creating multiple challenges for the city and its inhabitants. As a result, an immediate requirement for examining the urbanization over time till the current scenario to formulate subsequent development plans would be sustainable. The implementation of remote sensing data and GIS helps to analyze data to provide sustainable design approaches. This paper addresses problems that contribute to urban sprawl while promoting sustainable design to mitigate the future’s negative consequences. A Sustainable Approach for the Urban Sprawl of Kolkata (Circa 1690–2020)

The haptic propositions derived from the textile prototypes often allow for more than one interpretation. It impacts the decision on design alternatives during the phase of design evaluation and validation. The present study aims to conquer this challenge with a haptic design case study of automotive upholstery fabric. It links experimental psychophysics with design decision-making. The study results show that visual cues influence haptic detection accuracy and constancy to choose a final design option. © The Author(s), 2022.

Understanding the Role of Perceptual Haptic Conditions on Design Decision

National Education Policy 2020 outlines the vision of India's new education system to reconfigure its structure toward acquiring twenty-first century skills. One of the recommendations of the policy is the introduction of Design Thinking as a skills course across classes VI to XII. This article investigates the scope of design education in Indian schools in meeting the requirements of twenty-first century skills. This investigation includes a detailed narrative literature review of National Education Policy 2020, twenty-first century skills, and design education. The findings of the review clearly indicate the relevance and impact of design education in meeting the demands of the twenty-first century by extending design learning to school education. Pioneering studies on twenty-first-century skills and recent studies on design education are further reviewed. The study illustrates these findings through a tabular representation of the keywords for twenty-first-century skill requirements as well as knowledge and pedagogies offered by design education. The overlap between these keywords is further represented and discussed to direct the attention of Indian education stakeholders to the importance of design education in providing students with twenty-first-century skills. In the absence of any published evidence of design education (curriculum, pedagogy, operation, impact, etc.) in Indian schools, the study provides a theoretical basis for extending the knowledge base and scope of design education in Indian schools that can be attained by collecting the views of Indian education stakeholders and conducting empirical studies in Indian classrooms. © 2022 Common Ground Research Networks. A Critical Review of National Education Policy 2020: Role of Twenty-First-Century Skills and Scope of Design Education in Indian Schools

Activities intended at increasing the accessibility of offers connected with urban growth and efforts and pragmatic practices targeted at boosting community contact through the usage of common areas contribute to cultural integration in the urban context. Bag Bazar Street is one of Kolkata’s three main streets, known as the grandmother road in ekantoporibar (joint family), making it an excellent case study site. By developing and assessing ideas regarding urban mobility characteristics and linkages across time, syntactic space analyses aid in the examination of diverse historical sources to build a coherent narrative of urban topology configuration. In a quantitative study of urban space and space syntax, enticing prospects as an exciting development of spaces use the city plan as the initial stage for investigating the historical relationship between the urban setting and urban life. The significant features of the axial line are with utilizing the argumentation of extrinsic spatial features in space syntax. DepthMap, open-source software for studying the visibility of urban core, was used in this study. The utilization of an axial map with a connection map is to frame basic facts in the study. Any strategy to revival or smart city development necessitates a full grasp of the spatial factors and stages that characterize our urban communities, as well as the link between the two. Consequently, this research uses axial analysis and visibility graph analysis to validate the degree of functionality of Kolkata’s Bag Bazar street over time as an input for digital preservation. Evolution of Bagbazar Street Through Visibility Graph Analysis (1746–2020)

The psychological term affective quality denotes the ability of objects to change how individuals feel when they encounter those objects. In design research, the affective qualities of inspirational materials and the perception of such affective qualities have been studied, mainly from a positivist standpoint. This involves experimental methodologies and tools like rating scales which imply objective measurements of perception of affective qualities to establish cause-effect relationships. However, affective quality is enmeshed in cultural and contextual frameworks. This implies that there can be subjective perceptions of affective quality that demand more descriptive research. This paper contextualises a descriptive phenomeological approach to study designers’ subjective perceptions of affective qualities of inspirational material. Urban Air Mobility (UAM) can provide new air mobility faster and avoid city traffic with the growth of new technologies. But they need to be co-developed with the city infrastructure. Thus, understanding the working scenarios of UAM and how they will interact with the city and the other modes of transport systems is vital. Storyboarding helps policymakers, city planners, designers, and investors better understand the product's contextual interaction over time. Understanding Working Scenarios of Urban Air Mobility

Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs) have been accessed on various configurations over the past decade. This literature review deals with the issue of determining the appropriate design for an Autonomous Passenger Drone (APD). APDs have been compared with VTOLs on their pros and cons. The authors analysed aerodynamics and propulsion systems of multiple APDs. Further, the comparative analysis aids in designing the best framework for the exterior form of APDs based on human capacity, flying technology, fuel type, travel distance, door type, size, material, safety, cost, etc. © The Author(s), 2022.
