Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is a premier institute of science and technology established in 2008. IITH has been consistently ranked in the&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/reports/" rel="noopener noreferrer">top 10 institutes</a>&nbsp;in India for Engineering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nirfindia.org/2021/EngineeringRanking.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">according to NIRF</a>&nbsp;making it one of the most coveted schools for science and technology in the country.

Assam has a rich history of the Ahom dynasty for 600 years. With the first Ahom King Sukapha (A.D. 1228–1268) leadership, they set up their first capital in the Charaideu district of Assam. As for which, most of the Ahom architectures are observed in and nearby Sivasagar and Charaideu area of Assam. Most of the Ahom monuments are preserved under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Assam and Directorate of Archaeology, Guwahati, Assam. These monuments were constructed using mostly bricks, stones and mortar. Noticeably, the ornamentations in the brick monuments have managed to survive in fragments and sections; this is due to the effect of natural causes and the climatic condition of the environment. In some cases, the restoration process reduces the ancient aesthetic due to lack of understanding of the underlying design principles of ornamentation. Most historians and scholars have studied the iconography and archaeological findings of these monuments; the study on Ahom architectural ornamentation is significantly less. A pilot study was conducted to identify the surviving ornamentation in brick architecture monuments. Based on the identification, a categorization theory has been adopted to segregate the data. The categorization is based on the architectural sections of monuments that primarily includes motifs and pattern types. This paper identifies and compares the visual elements of ornamentation using formal analysis. It discusses the underlying design principles of ornamentation. Comparative Visual Analysis of Brick Architecture Ornamentations of the Ahom Monuments in Sivasagar, Assam, India

The Ahom dynasty has ruled Assam for nearly six hundred years. With the leadership of Sui-ka-pha (1228 - 1268) prince, they made their first capital in Charaideo district of Assam. During their reign, they built massive brick buildings, houses, and temples. Currently, some of them are preserved under the Archeology Survey of India (ASI), Guwahati circle, Assam. Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar, and Kareng Ghar are some of the most iconic buildings preserved under ASI. These monuments are constructed within the 1744 - 1768 time period. These buildings are some of the most important tourist attraction spots in the Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. With due course of time, it is observed that the construction materials are decaying. To preserve the aesthetic of the structures, modern bricks and mortar compositions are used to bridge the gap. This paper investigates and compares the early construction materials by analyzing the structural composition and patterns of the bricks and mortars of the three monuments. The analysis of collected brick and mortar samples was done using EDX, FT-IR, and PXRD. The EDX result displays the same periodic elements in bricks and mortars with varying weight percentages. The FT-IR spectra and PXRD patterns of bricks of Kareng Ghar and Talatal Ghar are found similar whereas the Rang Ghar displays a slightly different spectrum and pattern. In the case of mortar samples, the FT-IR and PXRD analysis show similar structural patterns. © 2021 Author(s).

Comparative material study of ancient bricks and mortars of Sivasagar and Charaideo area, Assam, India

The Ghanasyam House of Sivasagar district, Assam, India, is one of the detailed specimens in the ornamented brick architecture monument of the Ahom Dynasty. The monument is built during the reign of Ahom king Rudra Singha (CE 1696–1714), and it is protected under the Archaeological Survey of India, Guwahati circle, Assam (ASI). Multiple terracotta plaques are being used for the ornamentation that includes motifs, patterns, symbols and sculptures. This paper aims to present a visual analysis of the motifs and patterns of the monument. The collected data of ornamentation are sorted considering a categorization theory. This paper investigates the visual composition analysis and symmetrical analysis of the ornamentation. The results provide detailed insight into the visual attributes of the motifs and patterns. The paper identifies rudimentary principles in the composition of the ornamentations within a specific frame of reference. The quantitative data analysis identifies the dominating motifs and pattern types and multiple symmetry operations. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
