Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is a premier institute of science and technology established in 2008. IITH has been consistently ranked in the&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/reports/" rel="noopener noreferrer">top 10 institutes</a>&nbsp;in India for Engineering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nirfindia.org/2021/EngineeringRanking.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">according to NIRF</a>&nbsp;making it one of the most coveted schools for science and technology in the country.

There are separate programs for technology, design, science, and liberal arts. While several studies have examined the linear causal relationship between oil prices and exchange rates, little is known about the nonlinear causality between these two variables. The present paper tries to fill this research gap in the context of India and China. By applying the Hiemstra and Jones (1994) nonlinear Granger causality test to the VAR residuals, the study finds a significant bi-directional nonlinear Granger causality between oil prices and exchange rates in both countries. The findings suggest that the nonlinearity of oil price influences the exchange rate irrespective of the exchange rate regimes. Further, to check robustness, the persistence in the variance of oil price and exchange rate is taken into account using a GARCH (1, 1) model. While the results consistently hold in the case of India, with respect to China, a unidirectional causality runs from exchange rate to oil price. However, the oil price in China does not Granger cause exchange rate. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Nonlinear causality between crude oil price and exchange rate: A comparative study of China and India

The present article explores the factors that influence the profitability of Indian banking sector in the post-reform period using the data from 1995 to 2012. The results indicate that operating profits, wage bills, non-performing assets and net interest margin affect the profitability of Indian banks, while the priority sector lending does not have any impact on bank profitability in India. Further, the net interest margin is found to be significantly reducing profitability. Hence, it is suggested that banking sector in India should focus on reducing its operational expenses. © 2015, © 2015 IMI.

Determinants of Bank Profitability in the Post-reform Period: Evidence from India

Context: Nondisclosure of cancer diagnosis is common in many Eastern countries. Consequently, immigrant families often approach oncologists with requests for nondisclosure in Western countries. Aims: To explore differences in the attitudes and practices of Western-born and nonWestern born oncologists in Australia when faced with a nondisclosure request. Settings and Design: Using a cross-sectional design, oncologists were interviewed over the telephone. Methods: Using the snowball method, 14 Australian (Western = 9, non-Western = 5) oncologists were recruited. Oncologists participated in a semi-structured interview exploring their experiences of, and response to, a request for nondisclosure, and their perceptions of how their cultural background influenced these attitudes and responses. Analysis: The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results: Six main themes emerged from the study: (1) Barriers to truthful communication, (2) an ethical and moral dilemma, (3) high costs of nondisclosure, (4) cultural influences on interpretation and understanding of requests for nondisclosure, (5) emotional impact of bad news on patients, families and oncologists, and (6) truthful disclosure as a gentle balancing act. Conclusions: All oncologists felt that the family request for nondisclosure was difficult, with many cultural and emotional nuances to take into consideration. Some immigrant Australian oncologists who had a similar cultural background as the patient/family, felt they could better understand the desire for nondisclosure. Irrespective of their cultural background, all oncologists acknowledged that breaking bad news had to be done in a gentle, gradual manner. The study suggests a need to develop a culturally sensitive cancer communication model.

Responding to family requests for nondisclosure: The impact of oncologists' cultural background

This paper analyses crime against women and children in Delhi based on two data sources, the National Crime Records Bureau and an empirical data set of the Perceptions Survey of the Delhi Human Development Report, 2013. Using the NCRB data, the paper analyses trends in the rate and composition of crime against women and children from 2004-2006 to 2010-2012, including charge sheets and convictions. Results from the Perceptions Survey highlight the spatial nature of crime in the state, the differential experience of crime by social groups, as well as men and women. A key finding is the high vulnerability of children to crime in the city. What emerges from the comparison of secondary and primary data is the simultaneous existence of incidence of crime on the one hand and perception of crime and violence on the other. A combination of various data sources is important to capture both incidence and perception in order to gain a more holistic and in-depth understanding of crime and violence, a vastly under-researched topic in the social sciences. © 2015, Economic and Political Weekly. Crime against women and children in Delhi: Analysis of secondary and empirical data

Background This study applied the Common Sense Model of illness representations to understand the psychological reactions of Indian patients with cancer who report being aware or unaware of their cancer diagnosis. Methods Adult Indian patients with cancer (N = 329) were asked about their understanding of their illness (to assess awareness of a cancer diagnosis), and then completed the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale. Results Patients who reported being unaware of their cancer diagnosis (54.1%) experienced higher levels of anxiety and depression. After controlling for awareness, education, income, cancer symptoms, and cancer stage, illness perceptions accounted for significant amounts of variance in anxiety (ΔR2 = 0.42) and depression (ΔR2 = 0.33). Illness coherence mediated the relationship between awareness of a cancer diagnosis and anxiety. Moderated regression analyses indicated that several relationships between illness perceptions and anxiety/depression were stronger among patients who reported being unaware of their cancer diagnosis. Conclusions The Common Sense Model provides a useful framework for explaining the psychological reactions of Indian patients with cancer to their illness, particularly for those who report being unaware of their cancer diagnosis. © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Illness representations and psychological distress in Indian patients with cancer: Does being aware of one's cancer diagnosis make a difference?

This article provides an empirical investigation of the causal relationship between the current account (CA) and the capital account (KA) in the case of Indian economy. The results indicate the nonexistence of causal relationship between the CA and the KA. Furthermore, we examine the causal relations between the components of the KA and the CA along with exchange rate as the linking factor between them. The causal findings, in the above mentioned case, show different results. Our finding suggests that there exist a causal relationship from Nondebt flows to the CA via the real effective exchange rate. This implies that decomposition of the KA helps in identifying the source of flows that drives the CA the most. The results also indicate that volatile capital flows may deteriorate the CA balance and therefore, emphasis should be laid on improving the soundness of the financial sector before moving towards the full KA convertibility. © 2014 Taylor & Francis.

Causal relationships between the capital account and the current account: an empirical investigation from India

Ritual healing has been one of the core topics in anthropology and, to a lesser extent, in psychology as well. Much of the research on ritual healing has focused on how healing works, and what factors constitute the efficacy of healing. In answering this question, scholars have focused primarily on two main factors—the symbolic significance of rituals, and the relationship between the healer and the patient. This paper explores understandings about efficacy in a context where elaborate rituals do not occur, the role of the healer is minimal, and the sufferers do not have expectations of complete wellness. In the Mahanubhav temples in India, healing is not understood as the removal of symptoms. The healing process involves amplifying unpleasant and painful symptoms, thereby ‘drawing out’ the illness from the body. Moreover, the temple narratives emphasize the transient nature of temple healing, where people rarely become completely well. They therefore frequently return to stay in the temple as and when their symptoms recur, thus forging long-term bond with the temple community and sect. These findings suggest that temple healing is powerful not so much for the practice of specific exorcist rituals, but for providing a refuge and a community for suffering individuals. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Rethinking ‘Efficacy’: Ritual Healing and Trance in the Mahanubhav Shrines in India

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of self-efficacy and family supportive organizational perceptions (FSOP) on organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) among engineering college teachers. Design/methodology/approach – Teachers (n=183) from public and private engineering colleges in the southern part of India were selected using purposive sampling technique. Survey method was used to collect data using the following scales: new general self-efficacy scale, teacher OCB scale and FSOP scale. Hierarchical regression analyses was used to test the hypotheses. Findings – Regression analyses showed general self-efficacy having a significant positive effect on all the sub-dimensions of teacher OCB and as well as on the overall OCB score. On the other hand, FSOP had a significant positive impact only on teachers’ OCB towards the institution. In terms of moderation effect, FSOP moderated the relationship between self-efficacy and teachers’ OCB towards the institution. Research limitations/implications – One of the major limitations of this study is its relatively small and region-specific sample. The sample is also limited to engineering college teachers only. Practical implications – The findings from the study reiterate the need to nurture a positive organizational culture towards work-life balance issues in academic institutions. The study also shows that FSOP can be a powerful motivating factor to encourage teachers to participate in institute-level activities. Originality/value – Most of the earlier studies on teacher OCB are in the context of schools but the present study focuses on the role of internal attributes and organizational-level factors in teacher OCB. © 2015, Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Role of self-efficacy and family supportive organizational perceptions in teachers’ organizational citizenship behaviour: A study on engineering college teachers in India

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the impact of procedural justice on team members’ commitment and the role of task routineness and participatory safety in this relationship. Design/methodology/approach – Survey method was used to collect data from 177 respondents from 33 software development teams. Participatory Safety Scale from Anderson and West’s Team Climate Inventory, Colquitt’s Procedural Justice Scale, a modified version of Mowday et al.’s Organizational Commitment Scale and Daft and Macintosh’s Task Routineness Scale were used to measure the variables studied. Regression analysis was used to test the main, mediating and moderating effects. Findings – Results showed a significant positive impact of procedural justice perception on participatory safety dimensions and team commitment. Task routineness did not show any significant moderation effect. Perception of participatory safety had a partial mediation effect. Research limitations/implications – A relatively smaller sample size, purposive sampling technique and absence of relevant control variables are the key limitations of this study. Practical implications – The findings will provide managers insights on designing the team tasks and procedures to nurture participatory safety and commitment in teams. Originality/value – The study is unique in terms of selection of variables, design (moderation and mediating effects) and the context (software development teams). The study provides a holistic picture of team dynamics by studying variables related to procedures, task and psychological states of the individual. © 2015, Emerald Group Publishing Limited.
