Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is a premier institute of science and technology established in 2008. IITH has been consistently ranked in the&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/reports/" rel="noopener noreferrer">top 10 institutes</a>&nbsp;in India for Engineering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nirfindia.org/2021/EngineeringRanking.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">according to NIRF</a>&nbsp;making it one of the most coveted schools for science and technology in the country.

IITH offers&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/academics/under-graduate/">undergraduate programs</a>&nbsp;in all the classical engineering disciplines, applied sciences, design, as well as several modern interdisciplinary areas. Students are given a flexibility to explore a broad set of areas, and potentially pursue a minor or double major in a discipline that is not their own. Students who wish to seek a deeper understanding of their own discipline are strongly encouraged to get involved in cutting-edge research with the help of a faculty to mentor them, and earn an Honors in their own field.

The very foundation of IIT Hyderabad is based on&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/research/">research and innovation</a>. The vibrant research culture is evident from the number of patents and publications that IITH produces consistently every year. IITH offers&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/academics/programmes-offered/">graduate programs</a>&nbsp;at both a masters, and a doctoral level, in several diverse areas. There are separate programs for technology, design, science, and liberal arts. The&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/academics/post-graduate/">MTech program</a>&nbsp;is offered in various modes and durations to cater to the ever-growing need of postgraduate level professionals in the country.

IITH encourages and supports&nbsp;<a href="https://iic-iith.netlify.app/index.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">innovation and entrepreneurship</a>&nbsp;at every stage. The minor program in entrepreneurship is open to all students of IITH, and many of the courses are offered by industrialists who are entrepreneurs themselves. There are various&nbsp;<a href="https://iith.ac.in/research/centres-incubators/">innovation centers and incubators</a>&nbsp;that promote entrepreneurship and help mentor young innovators. IITH has been very successful in building tie-ups with leading academic institutions around the globe.

IITH enjoys a very special relationship with Japanese universities and industries that goes beyond academic and research collaborations. In fact, some of the iconic buildings in IITH campus will carry the signature of Japanese architecture.

This paper examines the convergence of public expenditure and its major components using sub-national data from India. By employing the panel club convergence test, the paper finds convergence in per capita public expenditure across Indian states implying that distribution policies of public expenditure are effective and fair across the states. Subsequently, the convergence of per capita total social sector expenditure and its major components are studied. The results support the evidence of convergence for total social sector expenditures and in the case of its components, we find that six of the nine components display regional convergence. Three components, namely, per capita education, sports, art and culture expenditure; per capita social security and welfare expenditure; and per capita rural development expenditure display the evidence of divergence and the presence of multiple transition paths. From the policy perspective, these three components of social expenditures need greater attention by the state governments as these expenditures are important for social cohesion, sustainable development, and achieving millennium development goals. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Through a mapping of field data collected from two parts of India: Hisar in North India and Hyderabad in South India, this paper looks at the ways in which reproductive decline and ageing have become part of the discourse on assisted reproduction in India. The importance of mapping reproductive decline in different clinics and regional spaces highlights certain shared and distinct conflicts. The thematic discussions of the research findings place the privileging of temporalities in an ambivalent relationship with chronological ageing and reproductive decline. The linkages between ageing and infertility/fertility are more marked in the infertility clinic wherein the diagnostic protocols and treatment towards achieving parenthood are evaluated through the prism of social and moral judgements. Rural-urban differences, gendered expectations of familial roles and rules, and lived environments and lifestyles have a huge impact on the use and dissemination of assisted reproductive technologies in India. In this paper, social expectations surrounding fertility, children, and the family become part of the clinical discourse in the administration of assisted reproductive technologies; and carry important implications for ageing and age-related markers of status and role. © 2021, University Library System, University of Pittsburgh. Assisted reproductive technologies and the conceptualization of ageing in india

This paper examines the link between trade and economic growth by emphasizing on recent progress of global value chains (GVCs) for a sample of 58 countries over the period 2005–2015. The findings show that trade and in particular trade linked to GVCs spurs economic growth. However, the impact of GVC engagement on economic growth is diverse as we broaden our analysis to sectoral level. The study also notes that the benefits associated with regional value chains are higher. Furthermore, functional specialization in trade also plays a key role in improving growth. Therefore, policies to promote the GVC engagement and strengthening the domestic fundamentals should be the aim for countries to further benefit from trade. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Do global value chains enhance or slog economic growth?

This study investigates the fiscal performance of 21 Indian states for the period 1980–81 to 2017–18. To do so, this study first applies a widely used multidimensional composite index. Second, this study implements data envelopment analysis (DEA) to assess the fiscal performance. The findings reveal that among Indian states, Odisha achieves the first rank and is found to be the best fiscal performing state in recent years. On the contrary, our results indicate that Punjab is the least performing state during 2015–16 to 2017–18. From the policy perspective, least performing states should get more attention from the central government and can adopt the policies of other best performing states, which may improve their fiscal performance. © 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Understanding the evolution of fiscal performance of Indian states

The objective of this study is to investigate facets of the human phonological system in an attempt to elucidate the special nature of mental representations and operations underlying some of the errors in speech sound disorders (SSDs). After examining different theories on the mental representations of sounds and their organization in SSDs, we arrive at the conclusion that the existing elucidations on the phonological representations do not suffice to explain some distinctive facets of SSDs. Here, we endorse a hypothesis in favor of representationalism but offer an alternative conceptualization of the phonological representations (PR). We argue that the PR is to be understood in terms of a phonological base that holds information about a segment’s acoustic structure, and which interacts with other levels in the speech sound system in the mind so as to produce a certain sound. We also propose that the PR is connected to an interface module which mediates interactions between the PR and the articulatory system (AS) responsible for the physical manifestation of speech sounds in real time by way of the coordination of activities of speech organs in the vocal tract. We specifically consider different stages of operations within the interface, a specialized system within the cognitive system, which can explain patterns in the SSD data that have so far remained elusive. Positioned between the PR and the AS, the interface module is the heart of the current study. The presence of an interface module is necessitated by the fact that not all errors of SSDs are explainable in terms of structural, motor or even the symbolic misrepresentations at the level of PR. The interface acts as a mediating system mapping sound representations onto articulatory instructions for the actual production of sounds. The interface module can receive, process, and share the phonological inputs with other levels within the speech sound system. We believe an interface module such as ours holds the key to explaining at least certain speech disarticulations in SSDs. © 2021, The Author(s).

The mental representation of sounds in speech sound disorders

This essay reads evolving cultures of white American middle-class masculinity in tandem with ekphrastic symbolisms of domestic architecture in Anne Tyler’s A Spool of Blue Thread. It interprets the text as a subversive narrative where if hegemonic gender norms oppress women and children, they also often confine men primarily to the role of a provider and alienate them from their own shelters. Accordingly, by focusing on the profound connection between masculinity and domestic architecture in A Spool of Blue Thread, this essay argues that Tyler’s postmillennial novel systematically debunks several conventions associated with both gender norms and domestic spaces. In sum, this essay—with the help of masculinity studies and space theories—suggests that by establishing how preservation, husbandry, and care over cold rationality and calculated aggression are elemental to constructions of both ideal masculinity and ideal homes in the current millennium, A Spool of Blue Thread necessitates conversations on changeovers that create felicitous domestic spaces for both men and women. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

We examine the sustainability of the current account (CA) deficits among the top deficit countries occurring consistently in the period after the global financial crisis period. Hence, we chose four developed economies, namely, Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US, and three emerging market economies, namely, Brazil, India, and Turkey. The results indicate that information about structural breaks, occurring around the GFC period, improves the cointegration results significantly. We find that five out of the seven countries, except Australia and the UK, exhibit sustainable CA deficits. Further, results with disaggregated CA indicates that the services account is sustainable in all countries while goods account is unsustainable in Australia, the UK, and India. Overall, our findings reveal the possibility of aggregation bias in affecting the CA sustainability results. Thus, CA deficits are not necessarily bad for an economy if it can generate sufficiently large future net export surpluses to pay its current net foreign outstanding debt. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.
