Abstract
This paper focuses on the stability behavior and design of wide-flange steel gravity columns under fire loading. Their behavior was predicted using analytical models and approaches that were validated using existing experimental results. The validated models were used to conduct parametric studies to evaluate the effects of column slenderness, axial load level, and rotational restraints on column stability at elevated temperatures. These results were used to develop comprehensive design guidelines for wide-flange steel columns at elevated temperatures. This paper presents the results and design guidelines for steel columns considering the effects of various parameters. The proposed guidelines are simple modifications of the existing AISC column design equations, and are continuous with them at ambient temperatures. © 2009 ASCE.
