Abstract
A theoretical closed form approximation for the asymptotic bit error rate (BER) is obtained and used for estimating the cost of the visible light communication (VLC) system in terms of the number of LEDs as well as the power required for satisfying the system performance requirements. This is done by modeling the VLC using stochastic geometry, where the random source array is generated using a binomial point process (BPP) with a heuristic source power allocation for obtaining average uniform illumination. BER analysis is done for both circular and square BPPs. The theoretical BER results are verified through simulations. The results obtained in the paper are extremely useful for designing practical VLC systems from traditional indoor lighting. © 2018 IEEE.
