Performance analysis of green microgrid architectures by comparing power quality indices

Abstract
In developing countries, the rate of rise in the demand is more than the generation, which results in grid outages frequently. There are number of drives to build synergistic and integrated microgrids to reduce burden on utility grid. Hybrid power systems are becoming a popular way in the design of microgrids by using locally available RES such as Photovoltaics (PV), Fuelcells (FC), and Windpower (WP) to compensate the depletion of fossil fuel resources. Proper selection of architecture with respect to specific location is a major challenge. Also, analysis of power quality to get utility grid interactions is strictly suggested by IEEE 1547 guidelines to provide reliable supply to utilities. With this intent, this paper analyzes the effectiveness of various microgrid architectures available in literature based on the calculations of various power quality indices. System modeling and simulations are done through MATLAB/Simulink. These systems support green architecture philosophies and applicable to medium-to-large erections like financial districts, universities, greater community buildings, and industrial zones. © 2014 IEEE.
