Abstract
This paper describes the design, fabrication and flight testing of an Oblate Spheriod Indoor Remotely Controlled Airship (OSIRCA). The conceptual design, sizing, envelope fabrication and initial testing of OSIRCA were carried out at LTA systems Laboratory of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB); while the fabrication of gondola, system integration and testing was carried out at Hindustan College of Engineering (HCE), Chennai. The paper is divided in three sections covering the key themes viz., Design, Build and Fly. The section on Design focuses on determination of key design parameters, viz., envelope surface area, volume, petal arc lengths and envelope fineness ratio. The section on Build discusses the procedure followed for fabrication of hull and gondola. The section on Fly gives some insights into the operational issues related to the tuning of various parameters such as balancing, ballasting, and additional tasks to ensure successful flights. © 2011 by Rajkumar S.
