Cluster kinetics of density relaxation in granular materials

Abstract
The possibility that the cluster kinetics involves cluster fragmentation and aggregation, individual grains attaching and dissociating at cluster surfaces was explored. The kinetics of the cluster size distribution were expressed as a population dynamics equation. The free particles were found to be analogous to a liquid phase and clusters to the crystalline phase. The similarity of the granular compaction with a liquid-solid phase transition was suggested by the model.
